'Level' wins in pro debut
HOLLYWOOD - Crowd favorite Rene "Level" Martinez of MMA Masters of Miami made a successful professional mixed martial arts debut, crossing over from street fighting late Friday at Action Fight League's Rumble at the Rock.
The 34-year-old won a unanimous decision against the more experienced Bounmy Somchay of West Palm Beach. All three judges scored it 30-27.
"I feel great. It was tough, but I kept my composure and listened to my coaches," Martinez said. "Kimbo Slice always said I had what it takes. Thank you, Kimbo."
The two ISKA title fights between Ariel Gandulla of Miami and Danny Babcock of Palm Bay and Michael Bernhard and Keith Johnson were scheduled to fight later Friday.
In front of a sellout crowd, including Slice, an aspiring UFC fighter of Coral Springs, at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Hotel and Casino, Steve Bruno of American Top Team Coconut Creek started his with a dominating victory.
Bruno forced Orlando's Clayton McKinney to submit at the 1:33 mark in the second round with a D'Arce choke.
Bruno, 27, of Coral Springs (13-5), used kicks, punches to the face and elbows to the head to soften him up in the opening round and took control in the second.
"My fighting speaks for itself, I don't have to say anything. He was never even on my radar on this fight," Bruno said. "Once his back hit the mat in the first round, he didn't want to be there any more."
ATT Davie's undefeated Rodrigo Ramos of Brazil forced Ben Merrell of Pensacola to submit in the opening round with an arm bar.
Californian Jessica Pene remained undefeated (7-0) after forcing Angela Magana to submit in the second round (4:10) with a rear naked choke.
